The goals of the Introduction Days are to welcome international students to Belgium, provide them with essential information about local culture, public transport, and student life, and help them navigate their new environment. The events also aim to promote the ESN network, encourage social connections, and foster a sense of community through shared activities and meals.
The Introduction Days at UHasselt Diepenbeek, PXL Hasselt, and UCLL Diepenbeek are designed to warmly welcome incoming international students to Belgium and help them settle into their new environment. These events are organised in close collaboration with the respective institutions, ensuring that students are well-informed and feel supported from the moment they arrive.
Each university or college holds its own Introduction Day, where ESN Hasselt plays a key role in facilitating the event. The day begins with a series of informative talks from various speakers, including campus police, school officials, professors, and other key figures. Topics covered include Belgium’s history, the public transport system, local customs, and practical tips for everyday life. Students are educated about how the Belgian traffic system works, cultural habits they may encounter, and how student associations operate in the country.
During the day, ESN Hasselt introduces international students to the ESN network and its benefits, including the ESNcard, which offers discounts and access to numerous student services across Europe. Additionally, we promote the upcoming Welcome Weeks events, which consist of 5-6 activities spread over two weeks, providing students with ample opportunities to socialise, explore the city, and connect with others.
Meals are provided by the institutions to create a relaxed environment for students to bond over food. For PXL, a lunch is provided, while UHasselt organises a frietkraampje (a traditional Belgian fries stall), and UCLL offers sandwiches. This shared mealtime fosters connections among students and contributes to a welcoming atmosphere.
The day concludes with a fun activity tailored to each institution. For UHasselt, we organise a scenic walk from Diepenbeek to Hasselt, exploring natural and cultural landmarks along the way. UCLL’s activity involves collaboration with their buddy programme, offering a fun and interactive experience for the students. PXL also arranges its own unique activity to end the day.
Overall, the Introduction Days aim to provide international students with a comprehensive introduction to Belgium, its culture, and how to navigate student life in the country. The event is not only informative but also focuses on building friendships, fostering a sense of community, and ensuring that students feel confident and supported as they begin their journey abroad.
