Within the framework of Social Impact Days, in this event we organized, we worked with the Bornova Youth Center located at our university.
Every year, March 21st is celebrated as World Down Syndrome Day. As ESN Ege University, we plan to hold this event on March 21st next semester, but we need to recognize the existence of these loving individuals in our society not only on this special day but every day, so we found it appropriate to hold this event on any day and wanted to spend time with those sweet individuals. All the materials we used while doing this activity were old things we no longer used. So, instead of throwing away the materials we found unusable, we combined them into a portrait in this beautiful event and gave them new meaning. We wanted to give our Erasmus students, our volunteers and our sweet friends with Down syndrome moments that they will remember throughout their lives.
In this event, which we held together with the Bornova Youth Center located at our university, each person with Down syndrome was paired with an Erasmus and ESNer friend, and they created a single portrait in which they reflected themselves by cutting pages and pictures from old magazines and newspapers that we brought with us and pasting them on a piece of paper. Thus, very different, colorful and wonderful pictures emerged. During this event, our students saw how creative, strong-minded and easy-to-learn individuals with Down syndrome actually are. There is no real difference between us; we are all unique as the way we are. Their strong communication skills and ability to express themselves remind us how much we can learn from one another. Inclusivity is not just an idea, it is a necessity. Each individual contributes to this world with their own beauty and talents. So we can all say; unity in diversity, diversity in unity!
