The goal of this activity is to combine outdoor adventure with environmental stewardship, promoting both the enjoyment of sustainable sports like kayaking and a commitment to local ecological well-being. By actively cleaning up the Neris River, participants gain firsthand experience in environmental conservation, helping to protect natural waterways and fostering a sense of responsibility toward preserving local ecosystems. The project also seeks to build community and teamwork, encouraging people to come together for a shared purpose while enjoying the beauty of their surroundings. Ultimately, it aims to raise awareness about the importance of caring for natural resources and inspire ongoing efforts to maintain clean rivers in and around Vilnius.
On October 13th, students take part in an invigorating kayak tour on the scenic Neris River, just outside Vilnius. Embracing kayaking as a sustainable sport, two teams of eight people each paddle through different sides of the river, collecting 16 bags of trash and multiple bottles (plus a chair and one carpet) along the way. The Neris River, being larger and calmer, is especially suitable for beginners, providing a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants. They also enjoy breathtaking views of Vilnius from the water, enhancing their connection to the city. The waste collected is brought back to Vilnius, where it is sorted and recycled. This event not only combines adventure with environmental stewardship but also highlights the role of kayaking in promoting a low-impact, eco-friendly approach to outdoor sports. Participants work as a team and make a meaningful difference in protecting the local waterways. This activity is part of our broader river cleanup project, which includes cleaning rivers throughout Vilnius and the surrounding areas.
