Goal of the Activity

In past months, unfortunately we had a really effective and shaking earthquake in İzmir, Turkey which our local members and international students have been affected as well. We had over 100 loss of people and property which is seriously scary. We wanted to talk to our students about trauma and effects of disasters and how to protect pour mental health after a trauma, so they will be able protect themselves for the further trauma or disasters' effects. Additionally, we aimed to include a skill to help a traumatic person.

Description

This activity has happened on Microsoft Teams with one of the psychological counselor of our university. The event was interactive and there was question-answer part in the end of the event. He talked about the traumas that would happen to people generally such as rape, disaster, lost of someone and etc. In addition, psychological counselor wanted students to talk about few traumas or bad situations that happened to our students. So, we shared it and felt better. Although, all traumas were mentioned, we mostly focused on İzmir earthquake which affected us. Students shared their bad effects of the earthquake and realized that those all are normal and humanistic. In the end of the session, counselor answered questions of students.
