The goal of the event is to foster environmental sustainability and active citizenship by engaging participants in meaningful actions like collecting plastic bottles for recycling and cigarette butts to reduce pollution. Additionally, the event promotes intercultural dialogue and community integration by involving Erasmus students and local volunteers in shared activities, including assisting marathon runners, creating opportunities for cultural exchange, teamwork, and fun. Through these efforts, the event aims to raise awareness about small actions that can have a significant positive impact on the environment and society.
The event, held during the Palermo Marathon, was a collaborative initiative between Plastic Free, Coripet, Maratona di Palermo, Risorse Ambiente Palermo and ESN Palermo to promote environmental sustainability and community engagement. Participants chose between two impactful activities: collecting PET plastic bottles at marathon refreshment stations for recycling which was handled by Coripet and gathering cigarette butts in the city to reduce litter and raise awareness about proper waste disposal.
Erasmus students and local volunteers worked together, not only contributing to the cleanup efforts but also assisting runners by handing out water bottles, fostering a sense of teamwork and camaraderie. This interaction encouraged intercultural dialogue and strengthened community ties while making a tangible difference in reducing pollution.
The event combined meaningful action with fun and underscored the importance of small gestures in protecting the environment. It successfully highlighted the values of sustainability, active citizenship, and social integration.
