The main objective of the activity was to make an hike to the top of Monte Somma, one of the most important symbols of Naples, and discover how the mountain was formed during the ages woth Mount Vesuvius' eruptions.
We started the excursion early in the morning when we took the train from Naples to Somma Vesuviana. Once there, we started the path entering the Vesuvius National Park.
After two hours of walking we reached the top, from which we could enjoy a wonderful view of Mount Vesuvius and of the gulf of Naples.
There, our volunteer Carminemade an explanation about the origin and the history of the mountain, which was once part of Mount Vesuvius, and then got separeted by it because of the violent volcanic eruptions that happened thousands of years ago. Today, Monte Somma is divided from Mount Vesuvios by the Vallley of Hell, and gives the whole volcano its characteristic shape.
After having lunch, we started the downhill path towards the city, where we took the train back to Naples.
