The goal of Hike & Clean – Monte Pellegrino was to promote environmental responsibility through an engaging outdoor activity that combined hiking with a cleanup effort. The event aimed to foster a sense of community, encourage active citizenship, and contribute to the preservation of a local natural landmark by removing litter along the trail.
On Sunday, March 16, ESN Palermo, in collaboration with Plastic Free and Risorse Ambiente Palermo, organized Hike & Clean – Monte Pellegrino, an eco-friendly outdoor event that blended adventure with environmental responsibility.
Starting from Scala Vecchia, participants from both erasmus students and plastic free, and of all ages, embarked on an easy, scenic hike up Monte Pellegrino, enjoying breathtaking views while taking action to preserve the natural beauty of the area. We were even joined by a school teacher and her young students who called us beforehand to ask about the possibility of joining the event. Equipped with gloves and bags provided by RAP, they collected litter along the way, helping to protect the local ecosystem and contribute to a cleaner, greener environment.
The event was open to all fitness levels, making it an accessible and rewarding experience for everyone. It fostered active citizenship, encouraged volunteering, and promoted sustainability through direct action.
At the end of the event, we placed the differentiated trash in a certain spot for RAP to collect on the next day and some volunteers joined for a group photo with the collected waste. Afterwards, Erasmus students decided to hike down to Mondello beach and enjoy the views along the way for which they were accompanied by us.
With a strong turnout of Erasmus students and locals, Hike & Clean – Monte Pellegrino successfully combined nature, community, and environmental awareness—proving that small actions can make a big difference.
