The main aim of this cultural event is to introduce Erasmus stu dents and international students visiting our country to various aspects such as the country's cultural heritage, historical heritage, dances, cuisine, geography, natural beauties, handicrafts, and more. The event, which follows a beautifully planned route, is visually aesthetic and aims to enhance cultural dialogue between ESN volunteers and Erasmus/International students, fostering respect and tolerance. Covering almost every aspect of culture, the goal of the event is to present these elements to participants in the best possible way over the course of 3 days. Additionally, during this 3-day journey, participants engage in continuous walking activities, with the intention of effectively implementing physical health and well-being.
ESN Türkiye organized a major cultural and popular event, Grand Cappadocia, which took place from December 1st to 3rd, 2023. A total of 220 participants attended this event, which is well-known both nationally and internationally. The event was held in Nevşehir, Cappadocia.
Grand Cappadocia spanned three days, and ESN Türkiye facilitated transportation to Cappadocia from Istanbul, Izmir, and Ankara. To provide participants with an introduction to Turkish culture, cultural music was played during the bus journey. Upon reaching Cappadocia, the event continued with its planned program, including the following activities:
On Friday, the morning started with a visit to Pasabag Valley, also known as the "Fairy Chimneys Valley," a natural beauty. Participants then experienced a pottery workshop where the process of ceramics was explained in detail by masters. The clay firing process and how they are painted were demonstrated, followed by a volunteer participant creating ceramics with a master in front of everyone. Later, the ceramic gallery was showcased, and a brief demonstration of the cultural element of Turkish coffee making took place.
Next, Cavus Inn was visited, an ancient Greek village with cave dwellings. It has a castle on top, and the views are breathtaking. Optional exploration of the interior of the houses was available. After checking in at the hotel, dinner was served, concluding the day with a Turkish Night held in a cave restaurant. The Turkish Night featured performances of different dances from the seven regions of Türkiye, and participants were invited to join the stage for a henna night ceremony demonstration, including an oriental dance performance.
Saturday started with Hot Air Balloons, a significant activity contributing to Cappadocia's recognition over the years. Participants who didn't ride the balloons were taken to a hill to witness the sunrise and the appearance of the volcanic mountain on the horizon as the balloons ascended. The day continued with a visit to the Goreme Open-Air Museum, featuring fairy chimneys, churches, and mosaics. After lunch, ATV rides were enjoyed, followed by a visit to Uchisar Castle, built on top of a cone-shaped fairy chimney made of volcanic tuff rocks. Love Valley, known for its interesting rock formations, and a visit to the Stone Shop, offering handcrafted items made from the region's unique stones, followed. The day concluded with dinner and a night event.
On Sunday, participants checked out of the hotel and experienced Panoramic View. Cultural interactions continued with participants joining a flag parade. Lastly, Ihlara Valley was visited, known for its natural beauty, monasteries, and churches, making it an attractive destination for nature lovers and history enthusiasts alike.
