The goal of this activity was to show exchange students Czech folklore.
This event aimed to introduce exchange students to Czech folklore traditions. As they study in Prague and folklore is still vivid in the countryside, it would be difficult for them to experience it. Therefore, we decided to provide them with a short introduction.
As one of our members is part of a folklore group, we were offered help with the event from them. They came in traditional skirts and they held a workshop on the basics of traditional Czech dances, such as polka, mazurka etc. They made a presentation about the different types of folklore in various Czech regions (for example South Moravian vs. Silesian or south-western Bohemian) - comparing clothing, meals or lifetime events’ rituals. We showed the exchange students that even though our country is quite small, it has a diverse culture and that these differences do not divide us, on the contrary, they enrich us.
To further deepen their experience, we also prepared some traditional Czech meals for them such as koláče (sweet pies) or chlebíčky (sandwiches, canapes).
