The goal of the activity was to provide Erasmus students with an enriching cultural experience by exploring one of Istanbul's most significant historical sites, the Basilica Cistern. This excursion aimed to enhance their understanding of the city's rich history and architecture, fostering a deeper appreciation of the local culture.
On the day of the visit, we met up at our designated location, a park in Sultanahmet, at 11:00 AM. After a brief introduction and an overview of the day's itinerary, we traveled together by tram to the Basilica Cistern, located just a short walk from the iconic Hagia Sophia.
Upon arrival, we were greeted by the impressive entrance which set the tone for the exploration ahead. After purchasing our tickets, we descended the ancient steps into the cool, dimly lit chamber. The atmosphere was mesmerizing, with rows of columns reflecting in the water below.
During our exploration, we learned about the history of the cistern, which was built in the 6th century to store water for the Byzantine Palace. The guide provided fascinating insights into its architectural significance and the engineering marvel it represented at the time. Students were particularly intrigued by the Medusa heads, which were used as column bases and sparked discussions about the mythology behind them.
The day concluded with a group reflection, sharing thoughts on the visit and what they found most captivating about the historical site. Overall, it was a memorable experience that left the students with lasting impressions of Istanbul's history and culture.
