The goal of the activity was to immerse Erasmus students in the rich history and cultural heritage of Istanbul by visiting the Topkapı Palace, the former residence of Ottoman sultans. This visit aimed to deepen their understanding of Ottoman architecture and history, while also promoting intercultural exchange among the students.
Upon arriving at the palace, the stunning exterior of the building and the expansive gardens took our breath away. After passing through security, we entered the palace grounds and were greeted by our knowledgeable guide. The tour began in the First Courtyard, where we learned about the history of the palace and its importance in the administrative and cultural life of the Ottoman Empire.
As we made our way through the various sections of the palace, including the Harem, Imperial Treasury, and the stunning Council Hall, students were captivated by the intricate tile work, beautiful calligraphy, and rich artifacts displayed throughout the museum. Our guide shared fascinating stories about the lives of the sultans and their families, offering insights into the opulence of the Ottoman court.
The day wrapped up with a group reflection session, allowing everyone to express their thoughts and highlight what impressed them the most about Topkapı Palace. The activity not only enriched their knowledge of Turkish history but also fostered camaraderie among the students, making it a truly memorable experience.
