The goal of the Social Day was to foster intergenerational connections and spread joy by bringing together participants and seniors from a local retirement home for a leisurely walk through a nearby park. The event aimed to bridge generational and language gaps through shared smiles, gestures, laughter, stories, and interactions.
The Social Day took place on a Wednesday between 2pm and 4:30 pm in a local nursing home. Originally, we had planned to go for a walk together in a nearby park. Due to the bad weather, the activity was moved indoors. We met the senior citizens at the nursing home and spent an afternoon playing board games together. The internationals were able to practise their German and the senior citizens enjoyed the company. A total of 30 senior citizens took part in the event. We split the group so that there were two of us at each table of four seniors. The internationals were great with the elderly and although some of them didn't speak German, everyone was very patient and we found a good solution so that someone was always there to translate.
The event was really well received by the internationals, the nursing staff and the senior citizens alike, so we will definitely repeat it next semester.
