Awareness-raising / Sensibilisation
We spent a meaningful day volunteering at a cat shelter! On a sunny Sunday morning in December, we visited and helped at the only cat shelter in the Venetian islands—an invaluable place that cares for abandoned, sick, and elderly cats throughout the year. Upon arrival, the Erasmus students were divided into different groups and entrusted with several tasks: cleaning cages, feeding the cats, petting and socialising with older cats, playing with energetic kittens, and even giving affection to HIV-positive cats—who are too often overlooked or feared without reason.
Beyond the joy of spending time surrounded by furry friends, the experience gave us insight into the reality behind what we often imagine as simply cute or harmless. The shelter's coordinator explained the difficulties they face daily: minimal financial support from public institutions, the stigma surrounding sick cats, and how few people choose to adopt them due to misconceptions or lack of awareness. Many of us were surprised to learn how much work, dedication, and love is required to keep such a place running, especially with limited resources.
This activity not only helped us contribute directly to the wellbeing of the animals, but also encouraged us to reflect on the importance of adoption, responsible pet care, and the social perception of animals with health conditions. By the end of the day, we left the shelter with full hearts, new awareness, and the strong desire to return—and hopefully inspire others to do the same.
