Getting to know the Slavic custom of welcoming spring
On 22th March, we organised a unique event, "Polish Spring Traditions", during which participants had the opportunity to learn and experience Polish rituals related to the arrival of spring.
The meeting began with a short presentation on the tradition of drowning Marzanna(a Slavic goddess representing winter and death) - a symbolic farewell to winter. Participants learned where this practice came from and what significance it had in folk culture. Then everyone had the opportunity to make their own Marzanna, which they could take as a souvenir. Taking care of ecology, mainly natural and second-hand materials were used to create the puppets.
At the end, some of the participants went to Starołęka, where a symbolic farewell to winter took place - joint drowning of a large Marzanna. The event was accompanied by live music, drumming and dancing, which gave the whole thing a joyful and energetic character.
Polish Spring Traditions is not only an opportunity to learn about old customs, but also to celebrate the coming spring together in an atmosphere of creativity and good fun.
