The city and its surroundings offer a rich history, cultural heritage, and many attractions. The goal was to visit the city's historical center, the Wawel Royal Castle, and the Basilica of St. Stanislaus and Wenceslas. The program also included visiting the Wieliczka Salt Mine, where salt mining dates back to the 13th century. The mine is known for its underground chambers, salt sculptures, and chapels carved by the salt mine workers. As part of getting to know the darker history, the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp was visited, which is a powerful but educational experience, reminiscent of the horrors of the Holocaust.
Included was a visit to the historic center of Krakow, including Rynek Główny and Wawel Castle. The Basilica of St. Stanislaus and St. Wenceslas in Wawel Castle was visited. The Jewish quarter of Krakow, Kazimierz, was also walked through, and some of the synagogues and museums there were visited. In addition, one full day was set aside for a visit to the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. The trip to Krakow included an excursion to a salt mine and included underground chambers, statues carved from salt, and a chapel.
