The goal of this trip was to give Erasmus students a chance to learn about Bulgarian culture, history, and traditions, while also promoting eco-friendly travel. By exploring Karlovo’s landmarks, enjoying regional treats, and hiking to scenic spots, students could connect with each other and experience Bulgarian culture in a unique and sustainable way. The trip aimed to build community, encourage cultural exchange, and create memorable experiences in nature.
ESN Plovdiv organized an eco-friendly day trip to Karlovo, traveling by train to promote sustainable transportation. Upon arrival in Karlovo in the morning, we enjoyed a walk to the town center, where we visited one of the main churches and saw the statue of Vasil Levski, a national hero. We then stopped to experience traditional coffee heated on sand and sampled a local sweet made with rose flavors, a specialty of the Karlovo region. From the café, students had a stunning view of the nearby mountains.
Afterward, we visited another church in town. Although there was an option to see a traditional house, we chose instead to explore the nearby waterfalls at the edge of town, at the base of the mountain. From there, we hiked up to a cross on the mountain, which offered a breathtaking panoramic view of Karlovo. After the hike, we enjoyed lunch at a traditional restaurant and finished the day with a walk back through the center for some tea before returning to Plovdiv.
