Description

On Saturday, 21st of October, we are going on a Saimaa trip! Join us and explore the region of Saimaa UNESCO Global Geopark! Check out, what places we will visit!

  • The Astuvansalmi rock paintings are located on the shores of Yövesi lake, a part of the large Saimaa. We will visit the place so you can see 5000-year-old ancient pictures.
  • Have you heard about balancing stones? There is Kummakivi in the forest of Ruokolahti municipality, which is 500 tons in weight and has been balanced for 11000 years.
  • The Salpa line is a bunker line on the eastern border of Finland. It was built in 1940–1941 during the Interim Peace between the Winter War and the Continuation War and further in 1944 to defend Finland. We will visit one of its defensive points in Syyspohja.
  • Have you ever heard about the White Death? He was a humble Karelian farmer and hunter. During his short service during the Winter War, he became the most resultative sniper in the world. Finnish veteran is buried in Ruokolahti, where we will see a rare exemplar of Karelian carpentry: the Ruokolahti belfry built in 1752.
  • In the city of Imatra, at the Vuoksi river, there is an Imatra Hydropower Plant. We will enjoy the Imatrankoski rapids show, which lasts approximately 16 minutes. Eight minutes after the flood gates are opened, the foams peak with an average of 400 tons of water per second flowing in the stream.
