The goal of the “Go Green” project in general is for ESN Portugal to promote environmental sustainability at a national level. This project allows ESN Portugal to lead by example when it comes to raising awareness to this important ESN cause, and inspire local sections in creating their own initiatives. Specifically, in 2024, this project had the aim of minimizing the environmental impact of ESNcard waste.
In 2024, the “Go Green” project of ESN Portugal consisted in collecting ESNcards from volunteers and international students, and then handing them over to the company, Contisystems, under their MERECE movement, so they could in turn transform them into urban furniture, as well as plant trees on behalf of ESN Portugal. Given the characteristics of the agreed partnership, ESN Portugal was able to collect up to a maximum of 12 kg of waste, in 2024, under the MERECE movement, representing twelve native Portuguese trees to be planted in 2025, as well as 12 kg of plastic waste being converted into street furniture.
