This activity was a part of the Social Inclusion Days - Fall 2020, which provides opportunities for international students to expand their knowledge on several topics regarding social inclusion. We believe that this activity gives them a learning experience - particularly, in this activity, we believe that we can get them more informed regarding food waste. As a result, we are forming respectful citizens who know what to do to prevent food waste and to make the most out of food.
In the 1st day of this activity, we presented some facts regarding the difference between food waste and food loss, and the impact of food waste. We also presented information on a portuguese Project called “Fruta Feia”, which aims to reduce the waste and loss of wonderful products by bringing to you fruits and vegetables that the producer would not be able to sell.
In the 2nd day of this activity, we presented some reasons as to why food waste is still a thing (e.g. over-preparation of food in restaurants, hotels and the foodservice industry) as well as some negative impacts of food waste in our planet. In a 2nd information threat (during this same day), we gave our audience some tips on reducing food waste, such as meal planning and consuming leftovers.
