Goal of the Activity

This activity was focused in opening up a discussion about issues that women encounter in the different countries with a broad, international scope. Both in the initial presentation and the following debate or informal colloquium were presented some data, statements, images and theoretical studies that helped to guide the discussion. Our objective was to bring up some topics such as labor rights, abortion, marriage and the recognition of women in several sectors such as sports, politics, businesses, etc. and put in common both an objective vision of the different countries' situation and our personal opinion on them.

Description

This feminist tandem took place on the occasion of the celebration of the International Women's Day (March, 8th). It was developed at the Espacio Joven Norte in Valladolid, where they let us one room with a beamer for our activity. Five volunteers participated in this event, and we had an audience of around 15 people.

The activity was divided into two parts. First of all, the attendees filled up a little activity at menti.com, where they were asked to write three words related to feminism. After that, our volunteers gave a presentation about the history of the feminist movement from the 18th Century to the present. The presentation was made by one of our volunteers in collaboration of Alicia Puleo, a Professor of Moral and Political Philosophy at the University of Valladolid. The objective was to bring closer the topic and make it easier to understand certain problems that might not be clear for everyone, contributing to make the posterior debate more dynamic.

Then, the second part of the activity began by opening up the circle and showing some slides about the different topics that we prepared in order to help the discussion flow more easily. We opened up some topics, such as abortion rights, and gave information about the diversity of policies in several countries, letting then the attendees comment on their own country and culture scope, as well as encouraging them to give their personal opinion.

The discussion was quite forceful and enriching, thanks to the active and respectful participation of the audience, who were mainly local students but we also had some international ones.
