The primary goal of this activity was to create an empowering and inclusive environment where young people could freely express their perspectives on human rights and reflect on their role in shaping a fair and equitable society. By incorporating interactive methods such as the World Café discussion and storytelling, the activity aimed to foster meaningful dialogue, strengthen critical thinking, and cultivate empathy among participants. As a Speaking Day, it also provided a valuable space for students to enhance their English communication skills, practise articulating their thoughts clearly and confidently, and develop the linguistic competence needed to represent themselves effectively in international settings. Aligned with the spirit of Human Rights Day on 10 December, the event sought to deepen participants’ awareness of fundamental rights and highlight the importance of individual and collective voices in driving positive social change. Ultimately, the activity encouraged students to translate their reflections into action by creating future-oriented messages and personal mottos, reinforcing their sense of agency and responsibility within the global community.
This activity brought students together for a dynamic Human Rights Speaking Day held in recognition of 10 December, Human Rights Day. The event began with a World Café discussion, where participants rotated between themed tables and engaged in collaborative dialogue on key human rights issues. This interactive format encouraged students to explore diverse perspectives, strengthen their critical thinking skills, and build a deeper understanding of both global and local human rights challenges.
The session then transitioned into a storytelling component, in which participants were first shown an image representing a specific human right. They were subsequently provided with a set of mixed photographs and asked to construct an original narrative that aligned with the theme. This method enabled students to interpret human rights concepts through a creative lens, draw inspiration from their personal experiences, and express their ideas in a meaningful way. At the same time, it offered a natural and supportive environment for practising English speaking skills.
To conclude the activity, participants were invited to write future-oriented notes and personal mottos, transforming their reflections into inspiring statements. This final step aimed to reinforce human rights awareness while encouraging students to develop confidence, agency, and communication skills within a culturally rich and inclusive setting.
