To get the ESN members, international students and local volunteers, in contact with the Association of Deaf People from Santander and Cantabria. To learn the basics of sign language, while at the same time interacting with a social group that we normally don’t interact with.
First of all, we got in contact with ASSC, the local association of deaf people, with whom we have already done this type of activity several times before. We spoke to them and agreed on a date to prepare the activity, specifying that we wanted to do a foosball tournament. After this, we internally organized the prizes: six medals, two for the first team, two more for the second team and two bronze medals for the third one, and some board games, all financed by ESN Santander. The maximum number of students accepted was 20, but at the end, only 17 were able to attend. The day of the activity, the volunteers and international students received some basic lessons of Sign Language and the Foosball tournament started. The tournament lasted for a couple of hours. While the participants weren’t plating, they were able to get a drink at the Association’s bar, play darts or ping pong. Finally, the winners were discovered, the awards were given out and the activity ended.
