The goal of the event was to raise awareness about the importance of sign languages and celebrate the linguistic and cultural diversity of people with hearing differences, emphasizing the significance of Sign Language Day. The specific aim was to teach sign language to Erasmus students, fostering awareness and unity. By learning sign language and creating a Reels video, the participants aimed to convey a message of cultural sharing and global unity. The activity successfully spread awareness not only among ESN members but also engaged the local community, including those who know the different languages, creating a meaningful social impact.
With the participation of Erasmus students and ESN members, we delved into the basics of sign languages, learning how to express ourselves inclusively. An expert ESN member in sign language guided us through the fundamentals, and we, in turn, shared our love with people through the art of sign language. This event stood as a true testament to inclusivity, successfully uniting a diverse group of participants with various abilities and backgrounds.
Taking place in an open area, the park, the event captured the attention of locals, children, the elderly, and individuals with different hearing abilities. The lively participation and expressions of gratitude from attendees highlighted the profound impact of the event.
Beyond being a venue, the open space symbolized acceptance and active welcome for people with different hearing abilities. The language used in our communication was intentionally inclusive, creating an environment where everyone not only felt welcomed but genuinely included and valued. Our emphasis on "linguistic and cultural diversity" underscored our commitment to embracing and celebrating differences throughout the event.
Throughout this event, the act of coming together and speaking the same language, despite facing challenges, held profound meaning for all participants. To convey the message of 'We share our cultures. We conquer the world with love,' we crafted and shared a video on our social media account, aiming to reach a wider audience. Simultaneously, we aimed to spread awareness on our social media platforms.
