As already mentioned in the description, the aim of the project was to strengthen social cohesion, raise awareness about political migration and improve the lives of political migrants in general and in particular in academic environments.
Specifically, the goal of the training course were:
- providing participants with the necessary knowledge about migration issues, management, and facilitation of groups with migrants, activity and project design & management, advocacy and social inclusion;
- empowering volunteers, help them organise high quality local activities and build a strong Network on the territory to better work with migrants and on social inclusion in general.
SAMISI - Stimulating Awareness on Migration through Integration and Social Inclusion is a project of ESN Italy, realised with the support of the Erasmus+ Student and Alumni Alliance funded by the European Union, that started in February 2022 and ended in July of 2022.
The project arose from the necessity to facilitate the integration of the increasing number of incoming political migrants in Italy, in the Italian Universities and in the student environment in general.
The aim of the project was to improve the lives of students with migration background in the academic and social environment and, simultaneously, raise awareness among the higher education instutions and the general student population on the topics of migration, social inclusion, intercultural awareness and understanding.
Due to the recent political and humanitarian crisis, it is crucial to work on the facilitation of the integration of students with migration background in the academic world, promoting their social inclusion, empowerment and participation.
The first activity of the SAMISI project was a training course. SAMISI training included a week of non-formal education activities for 25 ESN Volunteers (participants, coming from 5 different local Sections) aimed at training them on management and facilitation of groups with migrants, doing advocacy activities within universities, social inclusion, migration issues and awareness-raising.
The training was conducted with the help of a diverse group of experts, including both internal trainers from ESN Italy and external professionals (e.g. Insaf Dimassi, activist for political, civil, and human rights with a degree in International Law, experienced in assistance and linguistic-cultural mediation services, in particular for political refugees and asylum seekers)
The second activity of the SAMISI project were actions in local communities. Each month from May to July, our five local ESN sections (ESN Brescia, ESN Chieti Pescara, ESN Macerata, ESN Napoli & ESN Pisa) planned and implemented different activities in their local communities aimed at integration and raising awareness of the topic of political migration among academic institutions and the general student population.
Our Sections used different formats of activities and cooperated with different stakeholders in their local communities in order to achieve high impact.
