About the opera
Tom Rakewell is an English Faust, with a touch of Don Giovanni and a pinch of Tannhäuser. Nick Shadow is the name of his evil companion ("shadow"), who promises him an existence without ties and financial concerns. But Ann Trulove's unswerving love for Tom even weathers him going to London's whorehouses, into the arms of the funfair slut Türkenbaba or, at the end of his wild life, to the madhouse. The moral of the story is proclaimed in the final song: "The devil finds his work in idle hands, hearts and souls.
An American by choice since 1939, Igor Stravinsky was inspired by the series of copperplate engravings of the same name by the English painter William Hogarth to write his opera The Rake's Progress. Librettist W. H. Auden invented the humorous, moralistic plot, including the figure of the Mephistophelean tempter Shadow. Musically, Mozart and Händel were the inspiration for the opera, which marks the peak of Stravinsky's neoclassical creative phase.
We highly recommend to read through the plot even if the opera is in English.
