Mata Hari

In German, possibly without surtitles (not specified on the website). A production of the Gärtnerplatztheater. More information can be found here.

About the musical

She was a myth in her own lifetime, and her tragic death in 1917 at the barrel of a firing squad made her a legend: At the age of 19, Margaretha Geertruida »Griet« Zelle set out from the Dutch provinces to conquer the world. Her head full of dreams, she tried her hand at being an officer’s wife and as a mother on Java. But she wanted more ‒ and she became one of the most famous women of her time. As a shameless modern rebel against borders and rules, as an eccentric diva on Europe’s stages, as a male fantasy and finally as a double spy: Mata Hari!

A dense web of legend and fiction surrounds the figure of »Mata Hari« to this day. In their brand-new musical, Marc Schubring and Kevin Schroeder set out on an exciting musical-theatrical search for clues as to how Griet became Mata Hari. They transport the myth into the here and now. As a classic book musical AND a modern pop event, for which the theatre becomes a dance floor, they trace a woman who ‒ far ahead of her time ‒ was obsessed with attention, show and self-realisation and created »alternative facts« galore. But what is a lie? What is truth?
