Goal of the Activity

Volunteers and internationals students during the sign language course will have the opportunity to learn not only a new language (sign language even has its own grammar and syntax) but also a new culture. The deaf culture has some peculiarities that it is important to know in order to approach deaf people with greater sensitivity and more empathy. Volunteers and Erasmus people will have the chance to learn how to behave in the proper way the next time they meet a deaf person.  This is the goal of the activity: teach volunteers and Erasmus students the importance of understanding and of learning about minority cultures, in order to be a better citizen. Specifically, knowing diversity to know how to approach it in everyday life.

Description

The activity will be carried out in collaboration with the LISten association. This association deals with the integration between deaf and hearing people in the Turin area. ESN Torino volunteers and internationals students will follow an awareness course in Italian sign language. The course consisted of 2 meetings of two hours each.  In addition, the lecturers of the course will raise awareness among the volunteers to deaf culture.
