Goal of the Activity

Introducing international students to the Tyrolean dialect and helping them navigate linguistic difficulties

Description

Imagine the scenario:

You have just arrived in Austria when suddenly one of the locals approaches you and says "Gemma ans umidringa ins Beisl?"

You flee from this lunatic and are standing in the streets thinking you are safe. Suddenly, a shady-looking Tyrolean approaches and asks "Host a Tschick?"
Do you:
(a) Give them all your money
(b) Break down and sob in a corner
(c) Offer them a cigarette

Unhelpfully for the foreigner, practically nobody in Austria speaks proper German (maybe in Vienna). Instead, Austrian German (or "Mundart") is generally spoken (except in Voralberg, but we speak not of them). Austrian German has wildly different expressions, words, and idioms than anything you would ever learn at school. This can be quite the shock and leads to days of humorous misunderstandings.

However, there is a way to learn the secrets of Austrian German.

ESN Innsbruck is very kindly holding a workshop, run by our 100% Austrian German-speaking teacher. Not only will you learn how to talk like an Austrian, but - most importantly - to also to get to know other exchange students whilst having fun (all online of course – Corona and all).

After ESN’s boot camp, you will be able to:
(1) decrypt the spoken language of Austrians
(2) apply them on your own German language in order to sound more Austrian!

CONTENT
- Introduction, “fun” facts
- Some important characteristics of this gibberish language
- Typical Austrian words/expressions/idioms
- Interactive exercises to practice them right away

WHO IS THIS WONDERFUL EVENT FOR?
