The goal of the visit to the House of Terror Museum was to provide participants with a deeper understanding of Hungary’s 20th-century history, focusing on the country’s experiences under the fascist and communist regimes. The activity aimed to raise awareness about the impact of totalitarian systems, promote historical reflection, and encourage discussion on freedom, democracy, and human rights.
During the visit, participants explored the exhibitions of the House of Terror Museum, which document the oppression and suffering caused by the fascist Arrow Cross Party and later by the communist dictatorship in Hungary. The museum’s immersive displays and personal stories gave students a vivid and emotional insight into the historical realities faced by the Hungarian people during these periods.
ESN volunteers provided background information before the visit to help international students better understand the historical context of the museum. After the tour, participants were encouraged to share their impressions and thoughts in an informal discussion, reflecting on how the events depicted in the museum relate to broader European history and the importance of preserving democratic values.
