Goal of the Activity

The goal of the henna night event is to provide Erasmus students and other participants with an immersive experience into Turkish culture, particularly focusing on pre-wedding traditions. Through this cultural event, the aim is to foster cross-cultural understanding and appreciation. Participants have the opportunity to not only observe but also actively engage in traditional Turkish practices, gaining insight into the significance of these rituals within the context of marriage and family in Turkish society. Additionally, by enjoying traditional music and dance performances, attendees further immerse themselves in the rich cultural heritage of Turkey, ultimately promoting cultural exchange and dialogue among diverse communities.

Description

The henna night, or "kına gecesi in Turkish," is a treasured tradition deeply embedded in Turkish culture, serving as a joyous prelude to weddings. This ceremonial gathering brings together loved ones to honor the impending union of the bride and groom. With roots in age-old customs and rituals, the henna night holds profound significance. Symbolism permeates every aspect of the evening, particularly in the application of henna, symbolizing fertility, prosperity, and protection.

Beyond its symbolic importance, the henna night serves as a connection for community cohesion, providing an activity for family and friends to unite, share anecdotes, and bestow blessings upon the couple. Moreover, it stands as a vibrant testament to Turkish cultural identity, with traditional attire, music, dance, and customs illuminating the rich tapestry of Turkey's heritage. During the event, various rituals from Turkish culture are showcased. One of the highlights is where the groom's family formally seeks the bride's permission for marriage. Erasmus students showed this ceremony in a playful and theatrical manner, in accordance with traditional Turkish customs. Following this part, the bride serves Turkish coffee seasoned with salt to the groom. In Turkish culture, this act holds a special meaning regarding the sincerity of the groom's love for the bride. It is believed that if the groom-to-be truly loves the bride-to-be, he will drink the salty coffee without hesitation. However, if he detects the saltiness but refuses to drink it, it is interpreted as a sign that he may not be fully committed to fulfilling the bride's wishes or responsibilities in the marriage. This failure to embrace the symbolic challenge is considered a source of embarrassment and disappointment, as it suggests a lack of devotion or readiness for the marital journey ahead. This is followed by the exchange of engagement rings and the cutting of the engagement ribbon. After this ceremony presented, henna night is started. Small henna packages and packaged snacks are distributed to all attendees. The bride, dressed in a traditional "bindalli" gown, is surrounded by her bridesmaids, also adorned in traditional costumes. Henna, symbolizing fertility and good luck, is applied to the palms of the bride and her female guests. Throughout the evening, guests enjoy traditional Turkish music and Türkish folk dance performances.
