Getting to know an important part of Austrian culture

Description

SKI TIMEEE, APRES SKI TIMEEE!

It is no wonder you probably never really associated Austria with football because well, what we are really famous for doesn’t happen on a green field... but on white slopes. And what better way is there to experience Austria’s national sport than watching a thrilling ski race? And not just any race, BUT the very first one of the skiing season! Still not convinced? It takes place every year at the end of October on the Rettenbach glacier in the lovely Ötztal valley at an altitude of 2,610 metres. So this event is the ultimate opportunity to watch a (or maybe your first ever?) ski race in a unique location together with awesome people – and who knows, maybe it’s the very first time you set foot on a glacier, too! Bring a flag to support your home country, your favourite Erasmus buddy, warm clothes (!!!) and – what Austrians would say to describe that something is going to be really awesome – des werd voll die Gaudi!

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Clothing
Please (!) put on warm clothes and shoes. As mentioned above, the race takes place at a glacier/high altitude, so it gets quite cold of course. Ideally you should put on shoes that are waterproof, so you won’t get wet feet standing in the snow.

Food/drinks
Sölden is a touristy place and not actually one of the cheapest places to go, especially when the World Cup Opening takes place. If you would rather save money, you might want to bring a sandwich as we are going to stay there for most of the day. Of course you can also find a variety of snacks and dishes at the restaurants. Same goes for drinks – don’t be shocked that you will pay more than four euros for Glühwein (mulled wine). Just a reminder.
