The Quatuor pour la fin du temps by Olivier Messiaen was written in the Görlitz concentration camp for three musicians known to Messiaen during his imprisonment and together with them he performed it on 15 January 1941. 25 years before, in the midst of World War I, other and different war horrors determined the birth and style of Claude Debussy’s Sonate pour flute, alto et harpe. Small II by Franco Donatoni is the interlude of the two great French composers, united by the overcoming of the traditional rhythmic structure. A fascinating program performed by MDI Ensemble, an award-winning Italian formation devoted to the dissemination of contemporary repertoire and the twentieth century.
