The aim was to foster volunteering, get people to know different backgrounds and start creating a collaboration also in order to get Erasmus students close to volunteering during their exchange.
Cucine Popolari's aim is to build a network of these type of associations (en. "popular kitchens") where the meals were prepared and served to people with fewer opportunities and resources.
Some of our members volunteered there and we decided also to help and have dinner there from 15th to 18th December, as part of our National Platform, to support this organisation. In the future we plan to go there also with our Erasmus students in order to foster volunteering during exchange semesters.
We learned how this type of kitchen for people with less opportunities works, how to handle a kitchen in large volumes, sensitivity in contact with socially more fragile people, and also reuse and reinvention techniques, so how to manage the leftovers to make sure that they are not thrown away, and also solidarity among volunteers in the kitchens, mostly retired people, who manage to give new life to what should be the age of rest
