The main idea for this activity was for Erasmus students to spend quality time on a weekend afternoon by going to five different cafe shops on Lodz's main street - Piotrkowska. To make this event even more interesting, participants were divided into teams and in each coffee shop they had to complete certain tasks which educated them in the use of the Polish language when they ordered either tea, coffee or cakes.
Coffee Crawl arose as an idea to create an opposite event to fairly popular Pub Crawls which focused on not only exploring the city but also learning and integrating with cups of coffee at our sides. The participants of this event were divided into groups and were taken to five different cafés:
- Miriam at Piotrkowska 35, Łódź
- Kraftowa at Piotrkowska 48, Łódź
- Coffee Roots at Piotrkowska 148/150, Łódź
- Colour Cafe at Piotrkowska 132, Łódź
- Chocolate Cafe E.Wedel at Piotrkowska 69, Łódź
Cafés Miriam and Kraftowa are our organisation's partners which also allowed us to show Erasmus students the benefits of having the ESNcard.
In each of these coffee shops, teams had a task to complete in them. The majority of them - Chinese whispers, repeating the colour, reading the desserts from the menu, tongue twisters - were in Polish but one allowed exchange students to become authors as they wrote a short, original story. In addition to these tasks, the participants had a challenge in the form of ordering teas, coffees and cakes only in Polish, giving a more practical approach to the lesson in the Polish language. The collected points for these tasks were then used to bring out the winner, however all of the teams had a chance of winning. To resolve it, the short stories each team has written are used to declare the final winner of the event.
The connection of free and pleasant time spent by coffee with competition is an interesting and interactive way to know more about each other, excite the competitive spirit and provide a practical lesson on the Polish language.
