Goal of the Activity

To explore the city and get to know the myths behind the city of 'Antwerp'.

Description

Since its creation, the historical streets of Antwerp have been ruled by a stream of mythical stories. These were extremely popular, and were used by the city's inhabitants to interpret unexplained events, or simply as a form of popular entertainment. The city's rich history as a trading metropolis and diamond centre, as well as a haven for inward and outward migrating groups, gave rise to many mysterious stories and names that still hold sway in the city today. Ever wondered why we call an Antwerp citizen 'Sinjoor' and a non-citizen 'Pagadder', why, according to the inhabitants, the Cathedral of Our Lady was never finished, who the monster 'De Lange Wapper' actually is, or where Antwerp gets its name from? You will find out in this maximum two-hour audio tour through the historic streets of Antwerp. During the tour you will be accompanied by various audio fragments that explain the popular myths in a child-friendly and fascinating way. See you then!
