Goal of the Activity

Develop soft skills and confidence to communicate assertively in situations where young adults can encounter hate speech and discrimination.

Activity can be directly linked with topic of developing youth voices, as it helps to create a space that helps young people develop into active global citizens equipped to communicate and collaborate effectively, to make a positive difference in their countries and communities.

Our workshop was based on exploring the concept of assertive communication skills. The Workshop ''AssertCom'' had an introduction about goals and objectives we wanted to deliver to our participants. In the session, first activity - brainstorming, where participants expressed their ideas on the topic, as well identified what assertive communication skills are and how can they benefit them. After that with the help of role play activity we addressed the concept of hate speech and discrimination and how assertive communication can be used as a tool to battle it in various settings - ESN community being one of them.  After that, a short theory about methods and principles that can be used in order to have more assertiveness in our communication style, as well benefits it can bring.  Participants were given informative pamphlet about the key concepts as well suggestions how to practice assertiveness in their everyday life. Then we followed with activity, where participants were able to develop their skills by demonstrating assertive communication in various settings with the use of simulation.
