Goal of the Activity

The primary goal of this initiative is to raise awareness among students about the critical issue of marine and coastal pollution and its impact on sea turtles and the environment. Through educational visits to the Archelon Sea Turtle Rescue Centre and hands-on beach clean-up activities, participants are not only informed about the importance of protecting marine life, specifically endangered sea turtles, but are also encouraged to engage in environmental conservation. Additional objectives include promoting volunteer opportunities with Archelon and fostering a sense of environmental responsibility among both local and international students.

Description

The Archelon Sea Turtle Rescue Centre Visit & Beach Cleaning is part of a recurring project organized by ESN NTUA Athens, taking place twice each semester, aimed at raising awareness about sea turtle conservation and promoting environmental sustainability through hands-on activities. It involves two main activities: a guided visit to the Archelon Sea Turtle Rescue Centre, one of Europe's leading volunteer-based organizations dedicated to sea turtle protection, where injured turtles are cared for and rehabilitated, followed by a beach cleaning in the Glyfada area. Participants learn about the life cycles and conservation efforts for sea turtles while actively contributing to environmental protection by removing trash from the local beaches. The event promotes environmental stewardship, encourages sustainable behaviors, and introduces students to volunteer opportunities within the Archelon organization.

In the last two years, through five successful events, participants have also contributed to the adoption of two sea turtles, Troufa and Phoebe, supporting their rehabilitation. Furthermore, the beach cleaning activities have resulted in the removal of more than 300 liters of recyclable waste and over 1 ton of regular waste, making a significant impact on the local environment.
