The goal of the ‘56 Walk was to introduce international students to one of the most significant events in modern Hungarian history, the 1956 Revolution, through an interactive city walk. The activity aimed to deepen participants’ understanding of Hungary’s historical struggles for freedom and democracy while connecting key historical sites with the stories behind them.
The ‘56 Walk guided participants through important locations in Budapest related to the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. During the walk, ESN volunteers shared short stories, historical facts, and personal insights about the events that took place at each site. The route included key landmarks such as memorials, statues, and symbolic public spaces that played an important role during the revolution.
The activity combined historical education with exploration, offering students an engaging way to learn about Hungary’s past while discovering the city. Participants were encouraged to ask questions and reflect on how the revolution shaped Hungary’s identity and its path toward democracy.
