To teach international students a basic version of the typical Bavarian card game "Schafkopf". The cards have a unique design/ordering that is not quite known outside of Bavaria so the participants get to know cultural heritage that they would likely miss otherwise.
The workshop/games took place in the student bar "Campus Cneipe" C2, that ESN TUMi has a good cooperation with. The pub is located directly on campus and run by students, so the activity was scheduled in the evening where it is easy to join after lectures. The bar has a lot of space so it is easily possible to hold a workshop even with some other/regular customers being there. As most participants don't know the cards and the rules, the workshop starts with a centralised presentation via beamer. It introduces the goal of the game, as well as its general structure and the most basic rules. The unfamiliar cards and their different strengths/points are also explained in detail. Only a basic version of the game is taught to not overwhelm the participants. The presentation concludes with a short quiz (e.g. determining which cards are allowed the play in certain situations). Afterwards the games start. Each participant is provided with a cheatsheet which outlines the strengths/points of certain cards and, in text, the most important rules. Due to the number of tutors present it was possible that each playing group consisted of 3 participants and 1 experienced tutor. The first few rounds were played with open cards so that tutors can easily help with what cards to play and to teach some easy strategies. Once each group felt comfortable some games were played blindly with the tutors still helping with questions. Afterwards the games continued with open end and some groups e.g. already managed to play additional versions of the game. The cards were provided by ESN TUMi with a custom printed backside featuring the ESN star and some other visual elements representing Schafkopf and Bavaria. Participants could take the decks and cheatsheets home after the activity to continue learning/playing.
