Goal of the Activity

The aim of the activity was to introduce the international students to a local reality that deals with low environmental impact crops in order to address together the issues of biodiversity and sustainable agriculture.

Description

Thanks to the "Regeneration Erasmus: Young Green Ambassadors for More Sustainable Cities" project, co-funded by the European Union, we had the opportunity to take a group of international students to the ecological horticulture La Folaga Rossa in Verona, an agricultural company that cultivates products with a low environmental impact, for the protection of biodiversity. The members of the company showed us their fields and greenhouses, and then divided us into three groups to do different activities. The first group was busy planting some seeds, including sunflower seeds, which will then be transplanted into the soil in a few weeks, when they are ready. The second group worked on planting tomatoes, which will be ready for harvesting in the summer months, while the third group harvested and prepared nettles, which were then used to prepare the risotto we ate all together at the end of the activities. During the day, the people of La Folaga Rossa told us more about their activities, how they manage their crops according to the seasonality of the products and the markets where they sell their environmentally friendly products, explaining to the international students the importance of this type of sustainable agricolture. During the meal, students who had worked in different groups had the chance to sit together and exchange opinions on the different activities, while sharing a well deserved warm meal!
