Objective / Goal of the activity

Offer the students a chance to bring joy to the elderly and sing together with them. It is well-known that singing together has many health benefits lowering stress levels and creating a bond between people!

Description

Are you feeling the holiday spirit already and want to start December in the most loveliest way? Then join us at ESN Åbo Akademi, Uni Turku and IAC on our visit to an elderly home to spread the joy on Tuesday 3.12. ❤️

We will sing together some well-known Christmas songs and other popular songs and socialise with the elderly while they are enjoying their daytime coffee! ESN will provide a songbook with English lyrics so all you need to do is show up with the holiday spirit! Wearing something christmassy (red/green) is optional and if you have some instrument, you may bring it with you to play along! 🎶

Result of the activity

There were a lot of elderly singing with us and we had an amazing time! Unfortunately we were only four Finnish board members from ESN Åbo Akademi since some of the students who had enrolled didn't come in the end. Also we realised the date of the event crashed with many trips offered to the exchange students so a lot of students were out of town. ESN Åbo Akademi organized the event but the other local sections helped to promote it. We will organize similar events again but we will pay more attention to the date and making it bigger with the other sections!

Nevertheless, singing together with the elderly really was an memorable moment for the participants. One of the boardies played the piano and since there were no exchange students we decided to sing mostly old songs in Finnish so that the elderly can join! We finished with an Independence Day -related song since 6.12. is Finland's Independence Day. The nursing home loved the event although last time there were more participants and they want to co-operate with us more!
