This initiative stems from the need to contribute effectively to transfusion needs, involving all strata of society, from those of non-Italian origin such as Erasmus students. This event aims to raise awareness among the citizenship of Bari, where it unfortunately turns out to be a city with a low donation index, with a view to of an approach to the notoriously critical summer blood emergency season. Us as ESNers wanted to involve international students into the local society, that’s why we encouraged them to donate their blood. Moreover, we wanted to raise awareness about health issues.
On Saturday 27 May, we went with some of our international students to the site of a blood transfusion centre where they had the opportunity to donate blood. Firstly, they had to fill in a form with information about their health and lifestyle; secondly, they talked to the doctor, had a medical check-up, and had blood tests. Only afterwards, the students deemed medically fit were called one by one to donate. At the end, they were offered breakfast by the association with whom the event was held.
