Objective / Goal of the activity

Spend an afternoon with children and teenagers in risk of social exclusion making different activities in order to make them feel more confident and to enhance the multiculturalism and diversity.

Description

On the seventh of February, we went to the facilities of TODO AVANZA, an association located in Alcala de Henares, and we spent the afternoon with the children and teenagers of this association. We started by doing two groups, one with the children who didn’t know English and the Erasmus who already knew how to speak Spanish, and the other one with those teenagers who felt confident enough to speak in English and wanted to improve their skills and the Erasmus who did not speak much Spanish yet.  Our first activity was an ice-breaking activity in order to get to know each other well and to improve the confidence in the group. We distributed each group in a circle and with a ball they had to pass in turns to a different person and that person had to say his or her name and some details about himself/herself (hobbies, strengths, weaknesses, age, studies, nationality…). After this activity and in order to create sense of belonging and identity, everything with the purpose of enriching the sense of inclusion, we divided into small groups the teams and decorated some cardboard in order to create a flag that represents all the members of the group. After designing it, they had to explain to the rest of groups why they decided to create the flag in that way and what where the details that represented to each of them and to the whole group as one.

Result of the activity

The teenagers and children of the association as well as the Erasmus were really pleased and thankful after the activity, they all had  a good time and in fact some Erasmus showed interest in going to the association more times to collaborate with them. After the activity, one of the members of the association gave us some details on how they work.
