Goal of the Activity

The goal of this special iftar dinner is to bring together both Erasmus and local students to share a meaningful cultural experience while celebrating March 18th, a significant date in Turkish history that marks the Battle of Gallipoli (Çanakkale). This day symbolizes courage, resilience, and the strength of unity, as it commemorates the sacrifice and bravery shown by Turkish soldiers during World War I, who defended the Gallipoli Peninsula against Allied forces. The event aims to honor this historical moment, reflecting on how people came together in times of hardship.

Alongside the iftar meal, which is a tradition during Ramadan, students will have the opportunity to connect with the historical significance of hoşaf, a sweet drink that was part of the diet for Ottoman soldiers during tough times. Sharing this meal fosters intercultural understanding, promotes unity, and offers a chance to reflect on the importance of resilience. Ultimately, the activity seeks to strengthen bonds within the student community, deepen cultural awareness, and offer a space for reflection on history, all while enjoying a beautiful meal together.

Description

The special iftar dinner on March 18th was a truly meaningful and unforgettable evening for both Erasmus and local students. We gathered together to honor Çanakkale Day, a significant moment in Turkish history that symbolizes courage, resilience, and unity. The day commemorates the bravery of Turkish soldiers who defended the Gallipoli Peninsula during World War I, and we took this time to reflect on their sacrifice and the strength of the nation during challenging times.

As we shared the iftar meal, we enjoyed hoşaf, a sweet drink made from dried fruits, a traditional dish that was once consumed by Ottoman soldiers during their long campaigns. The simple yet nourishing meal reminded us of the resilience shown by those who lived through difficult periods.

The evening grew even more special when the group gathered for a performance of traditional Turkish folk songs. The music, filled with emotion and rich cultural history, brought everyone closer, creating an atmosphere of unity and celebration. It was the perfect ending to a night of reflection, connection, and shared experience.

The event allowed us to celebrate both Turkish culture and the power of community, leaving everyone with lasting memories of a beautiful evening spent together.
