Glasgow, GB

ESN UofG partnered with the university's Bhakti Yoga society to host a session of yoga and meditation as part of ESN international's Health & Well-Being week. The purpose was to provide a free way for students to exercise as part of a group, and for them to become aware of the benefits of meditation and regular exercise for their mental health.

Glasgow, GB

Students were invited to share a traditional Scottish Burns Supper - a meal eaten in celebration of our most famous poet Robert Burns. The goal was to raise awareness of a major cultural event which happens in Scotland every year, and for the students to find out more about the country's cultural heritage through this.

Donations Collection for 'Refuweegee' with ESN UofG

11/12/2019 - 20/12/2019

Glasgow, GB

Students who would be finishing their exchange or who would like to clear out their room were invited to donate clothes, books, kitchenware and other useful items they no longer needed to a local charity, 'Refuweegee'. Refuweegee welcome refugees to Glasgow by providing them with a welcome pack, which contains donated items they may need to feel at home in the city. The students were invited to write a small "Letter from a Local" - a postcard which would be included in the welcome pack, to welcome the new arrivals with a small message, for example, some advice on the best parks to visit. The goal of the activity was to raise awareness of how we can help others in society in a small way, and to inform students more about the work which people in Glasgow are doing to welcome refugees, and integrate them into life here. The collection also aimed to raise awareness of environmental sustainability - instead of creating waste by throwing our old items away, we can recycle them by giving them to someone who will use them!

Ceilidh in aid of UNICEF

27/11/2019

Glasgow, GB

ESN UofG hosted a 'ceilidh' - a traditional Scottish event with music and dancing - to help raise awareness and some donations for the charity UNICEF and the work they do to help vulnerable children throughout the world, and to help integrate students into Scottish culture, as most Scottish people grow up knowing ceilidh dances! The event was a celebration of local culture as it coincided with St. Andrew's Day, the celebration of the Scottish patron saint. As this event is quite physically demanding, we raised awareness of staying hydrated through Responsible Party.

The goal of the activity was for students to compete in teams and test their general knowledge to earn points. The themes included Scottish and international culture. This was promoted as an event which our buddy pairs might like to attend, so this encouraged the buddies to volunteer and invite their exchange partner. Everyone was encouraged to socialise afterwards and meet new people.

Pot-Luck Dinner with ESN UofG

29/10/2019

Glasgow, GB

Students were invited to make a dish from their home country and bring it to share with others. The aim was to promote intercultural learning, and recognise their skills by awarding a prize to the best dish as voted for by the students. This event aimed to promote environmental sustainability as we did not provide plastic plates or cutlery, and instead encouraged the students to bring their own. Everyone divided the leftover food at the end so there was no food waste.
