Sweet Coimbra is a tasting event where international students can taste the most traditional sweets and desserts in one of Coimbra's most iconic cafés: A Brasileira. It promotes the local culture and, at the same time, local businesses located in the city's downtown, a typical area of the city full of small cafés and shops and cultural heritage.
During this activity, students paid a small fee to taste several different traditional sweets made in Coimbra. It was hosted by A Brasileira, one of the oldest and most iconic cafés in the city, who provided the different sweets. Our volunteers explained the history behind each sweet, as well as the list of the main ingredients. After the main event, most participants stayed in the café chatting with each other and with our volunteers.
After this activity, the participants were more aware of the rich food history of the city and of Portugal. They really enjoyed the different sweets they tasted, and many were fascinated by how many different sweets there are in Portugal made with the same basic ingredients.
