Objective / Goal of the activity

The aim for this activity was to introduce pupils to German culture, establish a cultural exchange between Erasmus students and primary school children, and contribute to cultural diversity in education.

Description

On Thursday November 21, we visited Pio XII school in Valencia from 3.30 to 5pm as part of the activities organized for the Social Inclusion Days. Two German Erasmus students, Isabel and Meike, held a presentation about their country and they established a cultural dialogue with ten-years-old children. They visited three classes with approximately 25 students in fourth grade of primary education, and the activity lasted about 30 minutes in each of them.

Isabel and Meike talked about different topics related to Germany and its culture while they interacted with the students about the issues. They discussed about their native cities, the nature in different parts of the country, and some prominent Germans, such as Einstein, Beethoven and Goethe. Besides, they brought up several German topics and stereotypes, such as beer or bad weather compared to that of Spain. Finally, they played "Broken Phone", so Meike and Isabel started saying to the ear a phrase in German to one of the students and they whispered it in each other's ears to finally check what the last of the students had received.

This would not have been possible without the coordination work of the activity and the contact with the school carried out by the head of Erasmus In Schools, Mar, and the volunteers, René and Miguel.

Result of the activity

The result of the activity has been positive and rewarding. Both Erasmus students and pupils were happy and satisfied with the activity, and children had a lot of fun playing "Broken Phone". The sometimes had trouble understanding English, but this problem was solved.
