Objective / Goal of the activity

To introduce students to the history and culture of The Netherlands through film.

Description

Want to learn more about the Netherlands through film? Or do you just really like to snuggle up after a long day at university and watch a movie? Come join us at the very first Dutch Movie Night of this semester!

This time we'll be showing "Hoe duur was de suiker" (“The Price of Sugar”), which was the openingfilm for the Dutch Film Festival in 2013. The movie is set in the former Dutch colony Suriname and is based on a novel by Cynthia McLeod. It tells the gripping, romantic and heart-wrenching story of Sarith and Mini-Mini as they grow up on a sugar plantation in the eighteenth century. Where Sarith is considered the most beautiful woman in the colony and behaves accordingly, Mini-Mini lives forever in her shadow, a slave to her own half-sister. She, the woman in the shadow, tells us about the real price of the sugar.

Result of the activity

Students will have had a relaxing night at the movies, while also gaining knowledge of the Dutch history.
