We visited the exhibition HANDS UP in Vienna. HANDS UP is an all year round, interactive exhibition that takes visitors on a gentle, exciting and humorous journey into the world of silence. This journey explores the beauty of Sign Language and the practice of non-verbal communication. The aim of the journey is to reduce the fear of contact with deaf people and to build bridges between the world of the hearing and the Deaf.
When we arrived at the location we were greeted by our tour guide who handed out soundproof headphones to all of us. Then, he guided us through the exhibition showing us different facets of the world of silence: we were introduced into gadgets of the daily life like alarm clock or door bell for def people, we learned a few signs of Sign Language, communicated with each other with our body language, we even sang Karaoke by Sign Language and "listened" to music by feeling its bass.
It was a very informative and touching experience for all participants.
