This event aimed at showing an important part of the city of Coimbra's culture. Fado is a Portuguese music genre which was recently considered UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. It is also still part of Coimbra's student traditions, with many festivities being organised around Fado ballads and groups, like the famous serenades during the beginning or end of the academic year.
This activity was organised together with a group of Fado singers and traditional Portuguese guitar players. Participants sat together enjoying Portuguese wine while watching and listening to the Fado group, whose singer would explain the meaning and history of the songs in between their performance.
This night introduced the International Students to Coimbra's traditions and to the most typical Portuguese songs, and made them interested in exploring more of the city's student traditions while on their exchange program. It also peaked their interest regarding student traditions in Coimbra, and many were very excited to attend Queima das Fitas.
